LR Smith is a versatile pianist, music director, and collaborator whose career spans jazz, classical, gospel, and contemporary music. A Cleveland native, LR’s passion for piano began at the age of five, leading him to formal training at Cleveland State University and culminating in a BA in Music from Ashland University. He further refined his craft under the guidance of Luba Deninzon at the Cleveland Music School Settlement, developing a distinctive

musical style that bridges technical precision with expressive artistry. Throughout his career, LR has worked with a diverse range of musicians and ensembles, performing across northeast Ohio and beyond. His collaborations include renowned artists such as Broadway star Helen Welch, international society pianist Peter Duchin, and Glass Harp bassist/vocalist Dan Pecchio. He was previously the pianist for Gateway Band at Trinity Cathedral and currently continues to play with the band in new endeavors. His talent led him to be a longtime pianist for The Avenue, Jerry Bruno’s premier wedding band that brought sophisticated musical elegance to events throughout the Greater Cleveland area. LR currently serves as Music Director at New Life Missionary Baptist Church, where he directs ensembles that enrich worship through his expertise. Whether performing in intimate jazz venues, large-scale concerts, or sacred spaces, LR brings a deep musical sensitivity to every setting. His reputation for adaptability, technical mastery, and a collaborative spirit has made him a sought-after pianist in the region.
